If ambrosia was food of the Greek deities then sushi is the Asian sensation of Tel Aviv. We have no lack of Japanese cuisine in the City center but depending on the quality, imagination and presentation the prices range from chop stick cheap to overpriced.
Having had the pleasure of indulging in many a tempting tempura, sublime sashimi, sexy sushi and other delicacies in the Land of the Rising Sun it goes with out saying that I am a little more discerning when eating this food in Tel Aviv. As in every country ingredients are added or exchanged according to the local palate and you can sometimes find yourself eating a dish which looks familiar but tastes a ‘flight’ away from the original. It’s not that I don’t approve of improvement to enhance flavors , or creativity with ingredients, but this must be a worthy companion to the clever classics that have been served for centuries. I applaud the restaurants that can pull this off.
My Sweet youngest is enamored by sushi, although I am not exactly sure what the attraction is. Perhaps the prettiness of the rolls, the perfectly filled centers covered by white sticky rice decorated with slivers of finely sliced veg, the mini mountain of grassy green wasabi or the flesh colored pickled ginger. Perhaps it’s the lack of conventional cutlery. Chops sticks are certainly more hygienic but definitely more fiddly than a knife & fork, but not as flexible as little fingers….
We collectively agreed to go for a casual Asian eatery and found ourselves sitting on the cozy outdoor space of Yan Asian House. This tiny restaurant opened around six months ago and is situated near the busy corner of Ben Gurion Boulevard and Dizengoff Street. The outdoor area has a mix of floral upholstered bench seats, simple chairs and tables and a high stools against a bar which faces the street. Hanging glass balls radiate a glowing light and knee knocking music add to the casual and amiable atmosphere.
The food was pleasantly surprising. The white fish sushi was prepared with very fresh ingredients, looked very appetizing and tasted great. The Pad Thai was enjoyable without being too spicy and, the tempura seafood was a crunchy delight in the mouth. We overindulged and ordered a pudding. A dessert for the dieting Diva. A delicious combination of fried bananas, ice cream and a crispy triangular cookie. By the way did I mention the warm saki?
Yan Asian House has quite an inventive menu for those more adventurous The prices are reasonable and there is no need to ‘dress up’
