If you’ve had your fill of Middle Eastern munchies in Tel Aviv, perhaps a blast from the past might seduce you for one evening meal. I am talking about diners. Heavy on the hamburgers, steaks, ribs, french fries and milkshakes washed down with a tall glass of frothy beer. Well you are only young once…
There’s is a delightful diner in almost every major city including Tel Aviv. So when the craving for a juicy beef burger or crunky stuck together fried onions gets too much, you know exactly the type of eatery you need. I always ‘suggest’ to my Sweet family that we may want to have an American experience when I am feeling in the stuff my face mood. Knowing my manouvers too well, they generally crack up laughing but will happily drag themselves along for a high calorie meal- on Mom.
Of course, The Diner by Goocha located on Gvn Givrol is not exactly reminicent of the diners on Broadway, being somewhat younger but, there is definately something familar and comforting about the food, decor and relaxed atmosphere. The propertors are those of Goocha (fish & seafood restaurant) who with the same attention to detail have tried to emulate the best elements of the traditional diner with an updated tweek or two. The overall experience is close to an original, bearing in mind that the local customers usually speak in Hebrew and are surprisingly softly spoken for a change! Never the less a real effort has been made with a diverse menu, including the classics plus the pleasant service.
The interior is a huge space, plenty of room to spread your legs, lean back on your chair and be in no way close enough to hear the conversation on the adjacent table. A little like a Hard Rock Cafe but minus the rollerskates and pressure selling.
Food is tasty and obviously satisfying. When you are like me me without control how can it be otherwise? Take a trip down memory lane, when burgers were real meat and fries were actually organic shaped- not forgetting syrupy pancakes…
