- No matter how many times I wander around Tel Aviv, I always come across an interesting building that had previously gone unnoticed. In this instance I refer to the Artist House located on little known ElHarizi Street, just off busy Ibn Gvirol Street. On this particular day, in an attempt to capture Sweet mans imagination I insisted we take a long stroll through some of the leafy back streets of North Tel Aviv that lead off from a few of the major junctions. Needless to say he wasn’t too impressed with the idea, but without the energy to argue shrugged his hunky shoulders and mouthed ‘yallah’!I admit, it was quite a relief to find the Artists House. Firstly ,we it was getting increasingly hot and my better half was getting rather hot under the collar and secondly I thought perhaps I had dragged us in the wrong direction only to find that we would have to start over..The Artists House is a venue comprising of two seemly ordinary buildings. These cube like structures are situated on a corner plot that you might easily pass by if it were not for the black and white ceramic tiles on one outside wall, a huge crouching statue on the roof looking like a relative of the Alien movie and a piece of metal artwork placed outside the other building, which resembles the mangled end of a weathered witches broomstick… Sorry but it is said that “art” is in the eye of the beholder. There is also a welcoming tree shaded wooden bench so you can ease up on your feet whilst letting your eyes focus on the colorful passing visitors. This is a special gallery. An Artist House for veteran and up and coming artists. It was founded in 1948 as a base committed to exhibiting local art work, exposing directional trends in creative mediums plus promoting the life works of established artists. The galleries are a maze of rooms connected by short corridors or staircases. Each room displays the paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures of the current artists, often debuting local talent. The artists themselves are sometimes present and will happily explain their work and the inspiration behind it. Failing that, there are brochures or leaflets plus information next to each exhibition should you wish to contact the artist directly. Works can be purchased and prices much depend on the artist ( and your negotiating powers..?)The venue runs monthly exhibitions , so the content changes regularly. This makes the gallery an interesting place to visit on a frequent basis for those living in Tel Aviv and a worthwhile see for those outside the city or from abroad. Activities also include art lectures, painting & lithography workshops & model drawing. Become a member too if you so wish.We had a very pleasant afternoon. We discussed the artists, the art, the venue and if we were inclined which of the works we would buy for home! I would therefore recommend the Artist House not only for the visual stimulation but also for the intellectual stimulation it encourages between long married couples!”Easel” up!
